Capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of main pan-African banks 2019
According to the latest data, the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of Ecobank, the pan-African banking institution from Congo, stood at 28.8 percent in 2017, presenting the highest ratio in Africa. The Nigerian Zenith Bank had a CAR of 23 percent in 2019, followed by the South African FirstRand Bank, at 17.1 percent as of the same year. A higher CAR indicates that a bank is more likely to absorb unexpected losses.
