Reasons against microchipping pets in Japan 2023
According to a survey conducted in October 2023, the leading reason for not microchipping pets in Japan was that the pets were kept indoors. While almost 54 percent of respondents did not see the need to microchip pets that were raised in the house, around one in three owners were worried about the pain resulting from the injection.
To increase animal protection and tighten regulations in the country, the government passed a bill, which requires not only imported pets but also dogs and cats from breeders to receive microchip implants as from June 2022.
